It doesn't take much research on the Web to find complaints about the quality of search results for blogs. We've found that the default search engines that accompany most blogs compare poorly to Blossom search. For example, the engine built into WordPress:
  • Returns results listed by date rather than relevance!
  • Search terms are not shown in context.
  • Only articles are searched, not comments.
  • There is no spelling correction.
  • There are no suggestions if a search comes up empty.
  • There are no suggestions to help narrow a search that returns many results.

Using an outside search engine on a blog has its challenges because the blog content is accessible via multiplbe paths and because the HTML is generated dynamically. If the search engine is not tuned for the blog, then the results could include many duplicates. Also, if the search engine uses the webserver to determine the date that documents were written, then sorting by date will not work correctly as every document will seem to have been written "today".

Blossom is pleased to offer a special version of its hosted site search designed explicitly for use on blogs. It is tuned to crawl blogs efficiently and weed out duplicate material. It also includes a special parsing function to pick up article creation dates from the article text.

For an example of Blossom's Blog Search, take a look at Steve Arnold's blog on search, Beyond Search. As with all of Blossom's search services, the layout of the search results is completely customizable. See Site Search for a list of standard features.
